Welcome! I write fiction and nonfiction. In nonfiction, I write about technological innovation, which is related to my work as a faculty member in engineering at a research university in the Northeast. I am particularly interested in how best to prepare tomorrow's workforce for versatile careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
In fiction (a personal interest of mine that has little to do with my work, except that it strengthens my creativity and, to borrow from John Maeda at RISD, adds the A of Arts to STEM and make a better acronym), my current interests combine art and politics in Europe around World War II. My novella "Isolde 1939", about a French opera singer who sang for the Nazis, was published in May 2013 (paperback, Kindle). The story is loosely inspired by actual events. I have also published a novel, "The Breakthrough" (paperback, Kindle). It is about the wife of a French scientist at M.I.T. whose husband has a stroke after coming back agitated from a conference, and who must fight alone to save her husband’s reputation when rumors begin to circulate about his work. The theme of the novel is the mesmerizing quest for new knowledge that, ultimately, may not justify the personal sacrifices researchers make to advance science; more broadly, it is about the personal costs that come with trying to follow one’s dreams away from one’s family.
